Genre Trailers - 'The Ring' (2002)

  • The trailer begins with a conventional narrative where the non diegetic voiceover discusses the mythical horror story of a video tape that can kill people (video tape being antagonist)
  • The non diegetic music is sinister and creepy which is conventional of horror
  • The lighting is conventional for horror and uses a blue filter which adds to the cold ambience
  • The close up of the young boy representing innocence juxtaposed by the creepy music and themes of death are conventional of horror as they create the binary opposition between life and death
  • The diegetic sound of the phone ringing loudly can be considered a typical horror convention as it has been put in place to create a shot factor for the character by making them jump (this is almost intertextual with other horror films such as scream)
  • The appearance of the female ‘victim’ is quite conventional and the closeup of her fear when she’s on the phone is a familiar convention within horror films
  • The narrative is conventional where there is a threat from an ‘outsider’ that perhaps is possessing this young child (relates to other horror films such as 'The Omen' and 'The Shining'
  • Another convention is the protagonist on a quest to find answers/the imposter
  • The mise-en-scene is conventional such as dreary foggy weather, isolated settings and the bridge which could connote that there’s only one way in and one way out
  • Diegetic sound of creepy characters or voices outlining the fate of other characters which adds fear which is a convention
  • The fast cuts showing the characters running for their lives is a convention of horror
  • The piercing sounds of screams is another convention as it adds fear
