Genre and Online Marketing - 'The Boy Next Door'

  • The blue colour palette which connotes the frost atmosphere of the genre and the isolation the characters feel
  • The darker colour pallets used represents the genre of the sinister narrative and the despair the characters will go through as the victims of the antagonists
  • The image chosen of the protagonist - she looks sad and alone and vulnerable - conventions of a victim in the genre
  • The rain outside with the image of the male looking in is generic of the outsider spying on the protagonist and the rain is pathetic fallacy of the potential storm and disruption that the antagonist brings on the narrative. ( as convention of the genre )
  • The layout is simplistic and perhaps reflects the isolation convention of the genre
  • All the images shown are just of the two main characters or alone images of the protagonist.  The alone images reflect the isolation she feels (another convention of the genre where they feel alone and vulnerable to the antagonist)
  • The images show the dominance of the antagonist over her and how he is strong and powerful over her. (A common convention of genre)
  • The victim is dressed in many ‘sexual’ clothes which links into the sexual part of the narrative and how the male becomes obsessed withe her sexually too. (A common convention when a male has desires over the female so we view her as he does in the images)
