Brief For My Marketing Campaign

My brief is to produce a marketing campaign for a film which will include:

2 trailers

A website

A film poster

I have decided to analyse both horror and psycho-thriller products, although my film is predominantly horror, there will be some conventions of psycho-thriller within my film such as:

  • The psychology behind the characters and the relationship with the family
  • The horror element will cross with the thriller element in some parts of the film

The genre of 'Vengeance' is horror but in today’s current film market, it is very rare to not create a sense of hybridity in films. So therefore, I wanted to explore some other similar genres when carrying out my research and analysis.

Both 'The Talented Mr Ripley' and 'The Girl On The Train' are psycho-thrillers but do contain conventions of horror such as sound, mise-en-scene and dark themes.

Example 1 - 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' Marketing Campaign 2024.

'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' official trailer 2024 - conventions analysis.

  • The scene starts with a dramatic narrative and brings the audience into the story straight away. The narrative is engaging as it uses intertextual references from the 1980’s film bringing in a pre-sold audience.
  • The editing uses many fast cuts from one scene to another, this could help keep audiences engaged by showing them the exciting parts of the film.
  • They use lots of enigmatic cuts to create mystery to try and persuade the audience to watch the film.
  • A voiceover is used to make the narrative clear to the audience.
  • They’ve used footage from the 1980’s film to cause nostalgia.
  • Sony and Columbia pictures appears on the screen.
  • The next scene is when the audience starts being introduced to the characters (in this film, they have made the characters related to the 1980’s film characters which builds up a connection to the audience).
  • The narrative starts to show the disruptions within the story but cuts off the plot quickly through the editing which provides intrigue for the audience.
  • The scene then cuts to more dramatic music whilst the editing is sped up showing more important parts of the plot but again, the narrative is cut off at a crucial point which intrigues the audience to want to watch more.
  • The genres of the film are clearly shown by using conventions throughout. For example, the horror and sci-fi genre is shown through the mise-en-scene. The comedy element is shown through the dialogue, and the adventure and fantasy is shown through the narrative.
  • This shows the film as a hybrid and by showing all the different genres in the trailer, it will appeal to a different audience.
  • The trailer shows all the high end CGI’s which again acts as a marketing tool for the film.
  • The film name comes up towards the end of the trailer.
  • The last scene of the trailer is a humorous/scary scene which would catch the attention of the audience through humour and drama.
  • The last part of the trailer tells you the date of release.
