Intended effect on the audience
The opening shot is to instantly engage the audience into the narrative by using a voyeuristic shot to give the feeling that someone is spying and the knife is iconography which links to the horror genre and builds up suspense and dramatic irony. The slow pace of editing as the girl is cooking dinner puts the audience on edge as they are waiting for the disruption to occur, as does the crosscutting. As she leaves the house, the tracking and POV shots of the antagonist add tension and once he grabs the girl, the jump scare provokes fear into the audience, captivating them through the enigma and wanting to know what’s happened to the girl and why.
