Focus Group For Fonts
I asked the focus group which fonts they think would fit the horror genre. I also gave them a synopsis of my film and we had a discussion on which fonts they thought were most appropriate.
1 - Vampire: Response - the feedback for this font was that it looked a little bit old fashioned and child like. Whilst they liked the colour red, they felt the roundness of the letters made it seem less relevant to the genre.
2 - Chris: Response - the feedback was varied as the 3 females seemed to feel that the font was a little bit gothic but the males seemed to feel it was bold and had connotations of horror. The mixed reactions made me feel that I didn’t want to use a font that would potentially have different reactions from different genders as I wanted to appeal to a large audience. I know the fonts may not put them off watching it but I wanted to take their feedback on board.
3 - ITC Symbol Std Bold: Response - everyone was quite unanimous that this font did not fit the horror genre. Some of the comments included ‘this font reminds me of a business brand’ and ‘this font suits another genre’. In conclusion, all of the focus group suggested this should not be used.
4 - Future Bold Condensed: Response - the feedback for this font was really positive. Everyone apart from 1 person said they thought this fitted the genre really well and they really felt the formation of the letters, the colour red and the black background was very conventional and fitted the remit of the horror brief. The only negative for this font was that one of the male members thought it had been used too much in past films.
5 - Coliseum Pro: Response - the feedback for this font was all really positive. The comments included ‘this font is really smart and seems like it would fit horror’, ‘the word Vengeance looks bold and fierce which links to the genre’ and ‘this is the font you have to use, it looks so cool’. All members of the focus group seem very certain that this was the best out of all of them.
In conclusion, the choices were between 4 and 5 but as number 5 was unanimous and it was the font that is connected to Blumhouse, I have decided to use this font for my title cards and on my poster.
