Character Types in Horror

Character types in horror:

Typical characters in horror films include:

A hero character - The aim of the hero is to defeat the villain and save others. An example of this is Bill saving his brother in the movie ‘IT’. Traditionally the hero character is played by a male. (However, in recent years this has been challenged by using females.) In most horror films, the hero will defeat the villain.

The horror villain - The horror villain can come in different forms. E.g. serial killer, something from the supernatural, zombies and a form of natural disaster e.g. 'The Impossible' (this is a hybrid of genres). If the horror villain is human, their identity can be hidden ('Scream' and 'Happy Death Day'). If the villain is from the supernatural, often they will play on the fear of the unknown.

- Stereotypes of victims - The arrogant/fool character who thinks they can conquer the villain but usually ends up getting killed.

- The weaker characters who need protection (traditionally was a female victim e.g. Drew Barrymore in 'Scream').
